William "Bill" Miller

~~William R."Bill" Miller, age 84, of Olivia died Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at the Olivia Healthcare Center in Olivia.  Memorial services will be Monday, September 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia with Pastor Matt Hausken officiating.  Burial with military rites will be in the Olivia Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the church and will continue there on Monday for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers Bill's family prefers memorials to the Olivia American Legion or other Veterans programs.

Bill was born on September 16, 1932, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Arthur (Art) and Louise (Jensen) Miller. He attended  St. Aloysius Catholic Grade School in Olivia, and graduated from Olivia High School in 1950. Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, serving overseas in Korea and the Philippines.  After his military service he worked for the City of Olivia and the Willmar Police Department. In April of 1960 he started with the U.S. Postal Service in Olivia as a city carrier, then to clerk, and then to Assistant Postmaster. In 1970 he became Postmaster and held that position until he retired in December 1988.  On September 19, 1970, he was united in marriage to Barb (Reuber) Laffen and lived in Olivia until the time of his death.  Bill was active in the American Legion, Olivia Ambulance Service for 20 years, Lions Club, church, and other civic organizations. He was a registered high school football official for 20 years. He served as the mayor of Olivia from 1995 until 2010.  Bill loved to hunt, fish, play golf (he had a hole-in-one in 2001),  play ping-pong, do wood working, deliver meals-on-wheels, volunteer,  and spend time with family and friends. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought much joy to his life.

Bill is survived by his wife Barb;  children: Terry (and Doug) Tauber of Champlin, Kristi  ( and Craig) LeLoux of Olivia, Todd (and Margo) Miller of Willmar, Jennifer (and Bill) Virkus of Granite Falls, and his step-children Kevin (and Karen) Laffen of Eden Prairie, Dan (and Elizabeth) Laffen of Inver Grove Heights, Diana (and Kevin) Hood of  Clara City, and August Lafeen of Willmar; 19 grandchildren;  17 great-grandchildren, and his brother Richard of Florida. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Louise Miller.
