Delbert LeRoy Ufkes, age 86, of Hector, died Sunday, November 19, 2017, at his daughter’s home in Cokato, Minnesota. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector. The Rev. Jackie Cook will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Hector City Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. and will continue on Saturday one hour prior to the services all at the church in Hector. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Olivia, MN.
Delbert LeRoy Ufkes was born on March 15, 1931, in Renville, Minnesota to Peter and Arvena (Thompson) Ufkes. He grew up in Renville and attended school there. Delbert served his country in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War. He served from 1951-1953 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. Delbert was united in marriage to LoisAnn Huls on February 22, 1955, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector. They made their home on a farm south of Hector and Delbert worked as a hired man for several farmers in the area. He continued to help when he could up until last fall. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector and the Hector V.F.W. He loved farming, playing cards, watching western movies and shows, and having coffee with his friends in the nearby towns. He also enjoyed sports and loved watching his children and grandkids compete at their events.
Survivors include his four children: Mary Ann (and John) Ornelas of Buffalo Lake, Lorian (Scott) Haas of Buffalo Lake, LuAnn (Paul) Beste of Cokato, Jeff (and Julie) Ufkes Buffalo Lake; his daughter-in-law Vickie Ufkes (his late son Michael’s wife) of Hector; his 21 grandchildren and his 24 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife LoisAnn, his two sons Michael and Mark, and one brother and nine sisters.
