Kent J. Kircher, age 75, of Spicer and formerly of Olivia, MN, died Monday, February 5, 2018, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 12, at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service at Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia with Rev. Matt Hausken and Rev. Todd Nelsen officiating. Visitation is Sunday, February 11, from 3:00-5:00 pm at Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Olivia Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred which will be donated to charities that were important to Kent including the University of Minnesota Foundation for Cancer Research, Rice Health Foundation, and The Bethesda Foundation. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
Kent Jerome Kircher was born March 10, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN, to G. Jerome and Marjorie (Gilboe) Kircher. He was baptized at Faith Methodist Church and confirmed at St. John’s Episcopal Church. He graduated from Olivia High School in 1960 and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1964 with a degree in Business. Kent married Shirley Struck on July 20, 1968 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bellingham, MN. Kent’s fifty-year career in banking began in 1964 at the First National Bank of Minneapolis. He moved back to Olivia in 1968 and was proud of becoming the third generation of his family to lead the Citizens State Bank until his retirement on February 7, 2014. He valued his time with employees and his customers, always considering them part of his family.
Throughout his lifetime, Kent served in many leadership roles and provided support to numerous organizations in the community. Some of these included the Olivia Chamber of Commerce, Olivia Fire Department, Lions Club, Bold school boosters, Renville County Fair Board, Renville County Bankers Association, Minnesota Bankers Association, and Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church where he was a faithful member since 1975. He also served in the Army National Guard for six years and was honorably discharged in 1972 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Kent had many fond childhood memories of going to his family’s lake cabin in Pelican Lake, WI, spending time at the Mehlhouse farm, and planting many of the original trees at the Olivia Golf Club with his Dad. In later years, Kent thoroughly enjoyed working alongside his father-in-law at the Struck family farm. It brought him great joy watching sporting events and other activities of his three children and his seven Grandchildren. He valued his time relaxing and spending quality time with family and friends at his home on Green Lake.
Kent is survived by his wife Shirley Kircher of Spicer; his three children; Elizabeth (and Juanan) Perona, and grandsons Samuel and Nicolas of Eagan; Alan (and Christina) Kircher and grandchildren Isabella and George of Denver, and Jonathan (and Amy) Kircher and grandchildren Jake, Gillian, and Rhett of St. Paul; and his two sisters; Jane Mauer of Minneapolis and Faye Wiemann of Aurora, CO; and his Aunt Marilyn (John) Kircher; sister in law Laura (Roy) Daumann; brother in law Ray (Cathy) Struck, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
