Floyd Portinga

Floyd Portinga, age 95, of Lake Lillian died Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Bethesda Grand Nursing Home in Willmar. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 9th at 2:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian with Rev. LaDonna Ekern officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Lillian Community Cemetery. Visitation for Floyd will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at K-M Funeral Home in Lake Lillian and continue Friday at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Floyd Wallace Portinga was born July 28, 1922 on the family farm at rural Prinsburg, MN, to Arthur and Grace (Zuidema) Portinga. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. When Floyd was 15 his family moved to a farm near Lake Lillian. Floyd married Phyllis Sharpe on September 24, 1943 at the Baptist Church in Lake Lillian. They enjoyed traveling together and in later years wintering in Arizona. Floyd farmed together with his brother Bud for many years. He also established and operated P & R Horse and Trailers Sales with Alvin Roelofs for many years. After this Floyd sold Kiefer Trailers for 20 years. Anybody that knew Floyd realized that horses were his passion. Besides enjoying trail rides he was a charter member of the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Posse and Reserve, and served for 48 years. Floyd was an active member of First Lutheran Church, now United Lutheran. Phyllis died in 1998 and Floyd found love again as he married Marlys Sing on November 4, 2000. Floyd recently moved to Bethesda Grand to be near Marlys and he died there Sunday, March 4, 2018.

Floyd is survived by his wife Marlys of Willmar; his three children: Linnae (and Ron) Frandle of Alamo, TX, Lyle (and Debra) Portinga of Lake Lillian, and Lori (and Dick) Jensen of Breezy Point; his six grandchildren: Mark (and Kathy) Frandle, Brian (and Ann) Frandle, Joe (and Pauline) Portinga, Jake (and Tera) Portinga, Amanda (and Zach) Horning, and Christine (and A.J.) Lange; his nine great-grandchildren; his sister Lois View of Lake Lillian; and Marlys’ family: Mike Sing, Kevin Sing, David Sing, Janelle Russell, and their families. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Phyllis; and his brother Delton “Bud” Portinga.
