Lillian (Lil) Ester Wood was born on July 6, 1925, to Sarah Jane and Earl Carpenter near Hinsdale, Montana. In 1936, when Montana was too dry, the family moved to Minnesota. Lil soon met Curtis Wood and they were friends throughout high school. After graduating from high school Lil left for many adventures including jobs in Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington, D. C., and Okinawa, Japan. Upon her return to Minnesota, she married Curtis Wood on September 25, 1948. The Wood family lived in McGrath, MN where their 3 children, David, Zona and Steven were born. While Curt and Lil worked together in the family businesses, Lil also served as the Justice of the Peace for 9 years in Aitkin County and was well known for her wedding cakes. In 1961 the Wood family moved to Olivia, MN where they owned and operated the Olivia Nursing Home. With both Curt and Lil as licensed nursing home administrators, the nursing home grew from 32 residents to 90 residents. They also built the Bird Island Manor Nursing Home. After retiring, they enjoyed traveling to many states and countries. They especially loved spending winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where they have had homes for over 40 years. Lil enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, reading, bridge, golf, flower gardens, stained glass and crafts. She enjoyed making quilts for her children and grandchildren, and embroidering baby quilts for her great grandchildren.
Lil is survived by her husband of 68 years, Curtis Wood; children David (Dianne) Wood, Salem OR, Zona Smith, Olivia, MN, and Steven (Pam) Wood, Willmar MN; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; her sisters Pearl Butterfield, Lake Havasu City, AZ and Hazel Johnson, Hastings, MN; and one brother Donald Carpenter, Isle, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Clifford, Charles, and Clarence Carpenter, her sister, Florence Nutt, and son-in-law David Smith.
