Donald Metag Sr., age 88, of Danube died Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Centra Care Health in Monticello. Funeral services are Monday, December 18th 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Danube with Rev. Michael Kuschel officiating. Burial is in the St. Matthew's South Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Monday at the church for one hour prior to the funeral.
Donald Wayne Metag Sr. was born March 5, 1929 at Birch Coulee Township, rural Morton, MN, to John and Martha (Nemitz) Metag. He grew up at Franklin and Cosmos. When he was a teenager he did boxing with the Golden Gloves program. He was united in marriage to LaDonna Meyer on August 29, 1954 at Morgan and they were blessed with five children. They made their home first at Blomkest and then at Danube for many years. Don was an over the road trucker in younger years, then drove truck for several years for George Heerdt Trucking of Hector, and also was a self-employed truck driver hauling livestock to St. Paul and Albert Lea. After this, Don farmed at Danube and then returned to trucking continuing to work well into his eighties. Don was very gifted working with his hands whether building cabinets or fabricating with steel. He enjoyed doing handyman chores, reading, vegetable gardening, and watching Westerns on TV.
Donald is survived by his five children: Donald Metag, Jr. of Danube, Ronald (and Nancy) Metag of Hutchinson, Connie Metag of Danube, Laurie Metag of Rochester, and Cathy (and Richard) Steffen of Park Rapids; his three grandchildren: Jonathon Metag of Minneapolis, Evan Metag of Bemidji, and Emily Steffen of Park Rapids. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife LaDonna; and his brother Lyle Metag.
