Janice Gass, age 72, of Bird Island died Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, January 9th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. Dennis Labat as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 4-7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
Janice Florence Gass was born May 18, 1945 to Barbara Jacobson and Walter Wisniak at Harriet Walker Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. On September 9, 1945 she was placed in her adoptive home with Bennard and Florence (Fredrickson) Peterson on their farm south of Hector. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church at Hector. She attended Hector Community High School and graduated May 18, 1963. Janice was a pianist and organist twice a month at First Lutheran Church. She and Jo Klawitter loved playing piano and organ duets. Janice married Charles Michael Gass Jr. on December 17, 1999. She became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a member of CCW and St. Mary’s Adult Choir. Janice was a member of the Bird Island American Legion Auxiliary and served as president (2005 to currently), she was active with the Renville County Fair in the Farm Produce Department (2000-2017). She also enjoyed working at the Bird Island Blood Mobil. Janice loved spending time with her daughter, three grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She loved baking and making freezer jam for them, and truly enjoyed when Tracey and her went to Red Lobster in St. Cloud.
Janice is survived by husband, Charles Gass of Bird Island; daughter, Tracey (and Terry) Becker of Hector, MN; granddaughters, Cassondra Becker of Bird Island, MN, Kelsey Becker (and special friend Sean Henke) of Hutchinson, MN and Alexis Becker of Hector, MN; great granddaughter Nova Henke of Hutchinson, MN and seven siblings; Ronald (and Jo Ann) Peterson of Hector, MN, Larry (and Sue) Wisniak of Minneapolis, MN, Karen (and Rick) Nelson of Andover, MN, Daniel (and Terri) Wisniak of Crosby, MN, Holly Wisniak of Brooklyn Center, MN, Cindy (and John) Skelton of Andover, MN, Lorrie (and Jim) Booth of Corcoran, MN, brother-in-law Tony Gass of Brooklyn Center, MN, sister-in-law Sharon Meyers (and Richard) of St. Cloud, MN, Uncle Alvin Wisniak (and Aunt Eileen) of Brooklyn Center, MN. Janice was preceded in death by both her birth parents and adoptive parents, and her sister-in-law Sharon Gass.
