Sylvester William “Sam” Manderscheid was born August 10, 1934 at Wabasso, MN, to John and Johanna (Plaetz) Manderscheid. When he was a child his family moved to the Bird Island area. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School. Sam married Dolores Gumpinger on October 18, 1958 at Lamberton and they were blessed with four children. Sam and Dolores lived and farmed on the home farm and he was a lifelong farmer. In 2002 they moved off the farm and into Bird Island. Sam was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed attending auctions and especially buying the “dollar box”. Sam loved his rusty trusty Mazda truck and taught all the grandkids how to drive. He will be remembered for being hard working, kind, generous, always having a smile, and he seemed to know everybody. Above all Sam cherished time with his family.

Sam is survived by his wife Dolores of Bird Island; his four children: Peggy (and Mike) Julson of Olivia, Jim (and Nancy) Manderscheid of Bird Island, Jeff (and Vicky) Manderscheid of Olivia, and Rod (and Tracy) Manderscheid of Hutchinson; his eight grandchildren: Todd Julson (special fiend Danielle), Lee Julson (special friend Laura), Brian Julson (special friend Ashley), Kyle Manderscheid, Liz (and Brad) Gass, Laura Manderscheid (and fiancé Riley Carpenter), Brianna Manderscheid, and Jordyn Manderscheid; his brother Bud Manderscheid of Hector; and his sister-in-law Rosie Manderscheid of Olivia. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings: Barney Manderscheid, Herb Manderscheid, Todd Manderscheid, Jerome Manderscheid, Rose Koterba, and Margaret Reinert.
