Joan Santjer, age 73, of Renville, died peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, June 28, 2019, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church north of Renville. The Rev. Anna Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to the services all at the church near Renville. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Renville, MN.
Joan Santjer was born July 5, 1945, in Granite Falls, MN to Magnus and Johanna (Bakker) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm in Crooks Township and attended school in Renville graduating from Renville High School in 1963. She continued her education at the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. Joan was united in marriage to Vernon Santjer on August 15, 1964, at First Lutheran Church in Renville. She worked as a secretary for Trojan Seeds in Olivia for several years, and later she worked as a receptionist for Dr. McGowan in Granite Falls. Joan was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and a local homemakers club. She loved caring for her family, her gardens and flowers, decorating her home, and working crossword and Sudoku puzzles. She also loved to can, make salsa, and even taught Vern how to make Lefsa and Rosettes. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was full of wit, and could brighten any room with her smile.
Survivors include her husband Vern, her daughter and son and their spouses: Laura (and Dave) Hemingsen of Scarville, IA, and John (and Jessica) Santjer of Eden Prairie, MN; her four grandchildren: Tyler Hemingsen (and special friend Amber), Dylan Hemingsen (and fiancé Samantha), and Josie and Joey Santjer; two great grandchildren, Bently and Nolan; her brother and sister: Dennis (and Dolores) Johnson of Renville, and Elaine Goodall of Littleton, CO; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Harlan.
