Neil Rudeen, age 59, of Bird Island died Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Mayo Clinic in Rochester from complications due to a recently diagnosed cancer. Mass of Christian Burial is Monday, May 7th at 1:15 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation for Neil is Sunday from 4-7 p.m.at the Bird Island Ballroom. Visitation will continue Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for one hour prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred which Neil’s family will forward on to charities in his memory. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
Neil James Rudeen was born September 27, 1958 in Olivia, MN, to Dale and Laura Mae (Karp) Rudeen. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Bird Island Lake Lillian High School in 1977. Neil attended the University of Minnesota where he studied Ag Business and was a member of AGR Fraternity. He then returned home to farm full time with his family. Neil married Lynn Carlson on July 9, 1982 and they were blessed with three daughters. Neil was elected to the Board of Directors of the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Coop where he served many years including as Chairman of the Board. He believed in giving back to the community and had served on Boards at both the Renville County Fair and Bird Island Farmers Elevator. Neil will be remembered for being a wonderful husband of thirty-six years, the best Dad ever, and an awesome “Papa”. He enjoyed spending family time at the cabin on Green Lake and trips to Maui. Neil absolutely loved farming with his brothers and nephew and he referenced his best day would be combining beans on his birthday.
Neil is survived by his wife Lynn of Bird Island; his three daughters: Molly (and Rodrick) Houdek of Arden Hills, Carly (and Adam) Wirkus of Minneapolis, and Abby Rudeen of Minneapolis; his two granddaughters Quinn and Rose Houdek; his siblings: Ann (and George) Hoxie of Spicer, Ellen (and Greg) Weyandt of St. Paul, Rik (and Doris) Rudeen of Bird Island, Bill (and Cindy) Rudeen of Bird Island, Alice (and Luke) Retka of Le Sueur, Carl (and Melanie) Rudeen of Hector, and Pete (and Karen) Rudeen of Lino Lakes; along with many nieces, nephews, and Lynn’s family. Neil was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary.
