Norm Howell, age 75, of Olivia, MN, died Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Carris Health - Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services are Tuesday, July 31st at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Olivia. Rev. Yong Ok Son and Rev. George Schmit will officiate. Burial is in the Olivia Cemetery and military rites will be provided by the Olivia American Legion and VFW. Visitation is Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Tuesday at the church for one hour prior to the funeral.
Norman Roger Howell was born July 9, 1943 at Montevideo, MN, being the oldest of four children of Alton and Marjorie (Fischer) Howell. His early years were in Omaha, NE, before the family moved to Danube and he started his schooling. The family then moved to Olivia and he graduated from Olivia High School. In 1958-1962 Norm was a member of the Travelers Three Band where he was a guitarist and singer. After working three years with the Renville County Highway Department he entered the U.S. Army on April 27, 1965. After basic training he went to Ethiopia, Africa, on a mapping mission and spent 15 months surveying. After his discharge from the Army he returned to the County Highway Department retiring in 1998 as the Assistant Highway Engineer. Norm married Jan Zenk on February 15, 1975 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island and they made their home in Olivia. Norm was a faithful member of Faith United Methodist Church in Olivia and had served as Financial Secretary for 25 years. He was also a member of the Olivia VFW and American Legion and the Lake George lake association. He had enjoyed going to the cabin at Lake George near Spicer, fishing, golfing, biking, bowling, and gardening. Norm and Jan had also enjoyed spending the winter months in Lake Havasu, AZ, these past 12 years.
Norm is survived by his wife Jan of Olivia; his sisters: Nan (and Dave) Johnson of Apple Valley and Val (and Terry) Serbus of Olivia; his brother Scott (and Deb) Howell of Hutchinson; his nieces and nephews: Tracy Levering of Charlotte, NC, , Kristy (and Todd) Johnson of Farmington, Peter (and Jen) Johnson of Minnetonka, Tiffany (and Andy) Gustaveson of White Bear Lake, Joshua (and Toni) Serbus of Minneapolis, Kassidy (and Andrew) Carriger of Los Angeles, CA, Trista Howell of Brooklyn Park and Cora Howell of Hutchinson; his sister-in-law Cathy (and Ron) Seitz of Sleepy Eye; his brother-in-law Stan (and Sharon) Zenk of Foley; nieces and nephews: Mike Seitz of Sleepy Eye, Elaine (and Steve) Fischer of Sleepy Eye, Annette (and Dan) Olson of New Ulm, Sam Zenk of Monticello, Sarah (and Dave) Bartels of Clarkfield, and Susan Wiley of Foley; his uncle Robert (and Elaine) Howell of Willmar; as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives. Norm was preceded in death by his parents.
