Larry McNamara, age 88, of Bird Island died Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Prairie View Assisted Living in Hector. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, September 7th at 1:15 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery and military rites will be provided by the Bird Island American Legion. Visitation is Thursday 5-7 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church and continues there Friday from 12:00 noon to 1:15 p.m. Memorials are preferred and will be donated to Larry’s favorite charities. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
Lawrence William McNamara was born November 2, 1929 in Olivia, MN, to Henry and Ella (Wagemaker) McNamara. He attended Olivia schools and graduated from Olivia High School. Larry then attended the University of Minnesota Ag School and that is where he met the love of his life. Larry served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Larry married Marjorie Rick on February 4, 1961, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hector. They made their home on the farm south of Bird Island and were blessed with four children. They later retired into Bird Island and enjoyed many winters in Florida. Larry was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served his community well and was a past President of the Bird Island Lions and Renville County Fair Board. He was a founding member of the Southern MN Beet Sugar Coop, served as Director and was later President and was President of American Sugar Growers Association. Besides being a lifelong farmer he enjoyed spending time at the cabin, golfing, traveling, going on cruises, playing cards, and visiting with his many friends locally as well as at their home in Florida.
Larry is survived by his four children: Ann (Lyle) Rock of Prior Lake and their children Michelle (Joe) Kocina, Sara Rock, Ben Rock, and Hanna Rock; Pat (Terri) McNamara of Bird Island and their children Logan (Fawn) McNamara and Connor McNamara; Theresa McNamara of New Ulm; and Keith (Sara) McNamara of Bird Island and their children Jerson Kopka and Juliana Kopka; his great-granddaughter Blakely McNamara; his sister Helen (John) McCormick; his brothers: Jim (Ceil) McNamara and Dan (Mary) McNamara; and his brother-in-law Dale Rolsing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marge; his grandson Landon McNamara; his sisters: Marie McNamara and Jean Rolsing.
