Marlys Portinga, age 87, of Lake Lillian passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Bethesda Grand in Willmar. Funeral services are Tuesday, October 16th at 1:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian with Rev. Erik Rundquist officiating. Burial is in St. John’s Cemetery, Osceola Township, rural Bird Island. Visitation is Tuesday at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Arrangements are with K-M Funeral Home in Lake Lillian
Marlys Lorraine Portinga was born July 18, 1931 at Hector, MN, to Carl and Evelyn (Brown) Ahl. She graduated from Hector High School in 1949. Marlys married Lloyd Sing on April 2, 1950 at the Methodist Church in Hector. They lived on the family farm at rural Bird Island until 1984 when they moved into Lake Lillian. Marlys was a homemaker and was active at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Osceola Township, and later United Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. Lloyd preceded her in death in 1991 and Marlys married Floyd Portinga on November 4, 2000 at United Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. Marlys had enjoyed bowling, watching Gophers and Vikings sports, and being involved with both the Whist Card Club and Lake Lillian 500 Club. Marlys loved baking and her sour cream raisin pies were always a big hit.
Marlys is survived by her children: Michael (and Peggy) Sing of Manchester, NH, Kevin Sing of Bird Island, Janelle (and Dan) Russell of Manhattan, KS, and David Sing (and Jennifer Jacobson) of Lake Lillian; her grandchildren: Nathan (and Katie) Sing and family of Danube, Damian Sing and family of Ham Lake, Mandi (and Dennis) Young and family of Olivia, Nicholas Sing and family of Prinsburg, Jackie Carmichael of Istanbul, Turkey, Catherine Carmichael of Kansas City, MO, Jamison (and Brittany) Carmichael of Kansas City, KS, and Christian Carmichael of Moorhead; her 15 great-grandchildren; her sister Wanda Hixon of Willmar; many nieces and nephews; Marlys is also survived by Floyd’s family: Linnae (and Ron) Frandle of Alamo, TX, Lyle (and Debra) Portinga of Lake Lillian, and Lori (and Dick) Jensen of Breezy Point; and their families. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Lloyd Sing and Floyd Portinga; her sons: Cricket Sing, Mark “Sparky” Sing, and Kent Sing; her sister Doris Sing; and her brothers: Ray Ahl, Jerry Ahl, and Corky Ahl.
