Marie Freda Clough-Nelsen was born March 5, 1933 at her parents home near New London, MN to John and Gladys (Rood) Brix. She graduated from Willmar High School where she enjoyed music and played the viola, sewing, and excelled in accounting. Marie married Benjamin Franklin Clough, Jr. on October 6, 1951 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar and they were blessed with two children. Her work ethic was evident throughout her life as she farmed side-by-side with Frank and helped him build lake homes, often doing much of the tillage work, and raised many chickens. She was especially proud that she owned a "Century Farm" and lived there for 45 years, the longest of any of the Clough family. Being a Master Gardener, she enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers, providing advice to other home gardeners, and even raised gladiolas to supply florists. She was a wonderful baker, often making her famous tea rings and took great pride in putting on large meals for whoever graced her table. She also “invested heavily” in feeding the many varieties of birds that frequented her yard. Marie was proud of her Norwegian heritage, loved listening to opera and classical music, and cherished memories of her trip to England with her daughter. She was a faithful member of Rosendale Methodist Church where she was on the Council, participated in the choir and funeral committee, was the youth director for many years, and served as a delegate to Methodist Conference. Marie also served her community well by serving on various boards. Frank passed away on November 19, 2002, and then in 2004 Marie married Glenn Nelsen at Rosendale Methodist Church. Marie was blessed to be in her own home until the day she passed away.
Marie is survived by her daughter Cynthia Kalina (and Mark Benjamin) of Minneapolis; her sister Myrt Skindelien of Monticello; her brother John (and Beverly) Brix of Franklin, GA; her four stepsons and their spouses: Ronald (and Marjorie) of Glenwood, John (and Ilene) of Atwater, Guy (and Wendy) of Willmar, and Nick (and Beth) of West Des Moines, IA; along with their families. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands Frank Clough and Glenn Nelsen; and her son Kevin Clough.
