Noella Maehren, age 96, of Willmar and formerly of Olivia died Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Bethesda Grand in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial is Monday, February 11th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willmar with Rev. Steve Verhelst as celebrant. Burial will be Tuesday at 11:35 a.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation for Noella is Sunday, February 10th from 5-7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Monday at the church for one hour prior to the funeral.
Noella Marie Maehren was born August 6, 1922 at Buckman, MN to William and Rose (Loscheider) Sitzman. She grew up in Buckman and attended country school until her family needed help on the farm. Noella then moved to St. Paul where she drove street car and worked at the ammunition plant where she met Norb. Noella married Norbert Maehren on January 18, 1946 and they were blessed with three daughters. They made their home at Bowbells, ND, where they operated a restaurant. They then moved to Minneapolis while Norb attended Dunwoody Institute and in 1952 they moved to Olivia. She waitressed for many years at Bud’s Supper Club and baked at the Red Owl. Noella enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, occasional trips to the Casino, old time music as well as time spent fishing, camping, traveling, and following sports, especially the Minnesota Twins. She especially loved spending time with her family. She loved cooking and baking and was well known for her sour cream raisin pie and glorified rice. Noella had the pleasure of maintaining her own home until the age of 92, when she moved to Willmar.
Noella is survived her three daughters: Nancy (and Chuck) Johnson of Shoreview, Sandy (and Gene) Zens of Bird Island, and Patti (and Brad) Peterson of Willmar; her nine grandchildren: Kristin (and Shadly) Brown of New Ulm, Joe Ahlbrecht of Ostego, Jesse (and Sarah) Ahlbrecht of Ostego, Tom (and Gina) Zens of Litchfield, Amy (and Ross) Evink of Willmar, Brian (and Patti) Zens of Waverly, Benjamin Zens of Willmar, Melissa (and Ben) Kodet of Willmar, Mark (and Monique) Peterson of Elk River; her 26 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Rosemary (and Richard) Graf of St. Paul Park, Joyce Nottom of Backus, and Darlene (and Willie) Ellis of Moline, IL and her sister-in-law Viola Maehren of St. Paul. Noella was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norb in 1998 and her siblings: Henry Sitzman, William Sitzman, Dorothy Vandenheuvel, and Laverne Trusheim.
