Donald Eugene Switzer, formerly of Morton, MN passed away peacefully on February 18th, 2019 at the age of 85. He was with family at his residence, The Wealshire of Bloomington in Bloomington, MN. Visitation will be held at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia, MN Tuesday, February 26th from 1-2pm followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm officiated by Rev Mark Below. Burial will be at a later date in Morton Cemetery, Morton, MN.
Don was born on November 20, 1933 in Macomb, IL to Raymond and Irene (Wrigley) Switzer. In 1938, they moved to Denver, CO. In 1950, the family moved to Lamar, MO.
On September 2nd, 1961, he married Sharon Blume at the Morton Methodist Church. Don and Sharon have two children. A daughter, Cindy Jo (Switzer) Foss and husband Mike Foss from Hasting, MN. A son, Alan Eugene Switzer and wife, Christine (Tisdell) Switzer, from Chanhassen, MN.
Don attended school in Denver, CO and graduated from high school in Lamar, MO. After graduating, he worked as a draftsman for Lawn Boy Company in Lamar, MO. He served 9 years in the National Guard. In 1960, he moved to Minneapolis and worked for Control Data in the engineering department in Bloomington, MN. In 1975, he moved within the company to technical sales and enjoyed the opportunity to travel and meet with CEO’s from companies like Fisher Price, Briggs & Stratton, Los Alamos Laboratory, Israel Aviation in Israel and visited Control Data in Australia.
After retiring, Don and his wife Sharon spent 24 winters in Arizona. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, golfing, hiking and day trips in the Superstition Mountains with his Jeep. During Minnesota summers, he loved fishing trips, hunting trips to South Dakota, checking out and working on cars, watching and riding in old planes and watching any good movie.
Don was a member of the Methodist Church of Eden Prairie and Rogers, MN. While living in Apache Junction, AZ, he attended the Roadhaven Community Church and the Gold Canyon Methodist Church.
Don was a loving husband, father and friend who handled dementia with dignity and was thoughtful and cheerful until his passing.
He is survived by his children, a sister, Virginia and Robert Douglas in Powderly TX, Lila and Mike Huff in Mesa, AZ and a brother Galen and Doris Switzer in Alamogordo, NM and many nieces and nephews. From a previous marriage Don is survived by his first wife, Sandra May De Long. A son, Randy Switzer (Janice) Independence, MO, Grandson Aaron Switzer (Lindsay) Kansas City, MO, and Adam Switzer (Lacey) Maryville, MO and a Great grandson, Graham Switzer Maryville, MO. A daughter, Joy Switzer (Gay Lynn) Kansas City, MO.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon (Blume) Switzer, parents, Ray and Irene (Doney) Switzer and his step-mother, Hildred (Sewell) Switzer
