Geraldine was born in Olivia MN to Joseph and Mary (Pitka) Rodel on July 29, 1922, the ninth of nine children. She attended school through 8th grade at the Olivia 58 country school. Geraldine married Arthur Hubert Schumer of Bird Island, MN on September 29, 1948 and they enjoyed a full life with the birth of 7 children: Edward John, George Eberhard, Mary Anne, James Joseph, Thomas, Agnes Philomena, and Walter Thomas. Geraldine and Arthur were blessed with 13 beautiful grandchildren and (to date) 16 great grandchildren. Fond memories abound of Geraldine’s kindnesses in serving meals to family, friends, total strangers and visitors. She loved playing cards but most of all she loved attending daily Mass and praying for the myriad of people who entrusted their cares and worries to her. When health prevented her from attending daily Mass she prayed endlessly for everyone.
Geraldine is survived by her four children: Ed, George, Mary and Walter. Geraldine is preceded in death by her parents Joseph & Mary Rodel, four brothers: Louis, Jerome, Joseph and Benedict, four sisters: Dorothy, Mary, Mathilda and Josephine, her husband Arthur, two sons: Thomas and James, and a daughter Agnes. Mom, you will be missed.
