Jim Porter of Buffalo Lake MN, age 89, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 11, 2019. His memorial service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake with Rev. Jackie Cook officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
James Richard Porter was born June 15, 1929 at Thorpe, Minnesota to William and Olive (Taylor) Porter. He grew up in rural Bird Island and graduated from Bird Island High School. Jim worked for Hallquist Construction for five years and then helped with moving homes. He started Porter and Son Construction Company where he worked with his son for over 50 years. Jim was blessed with three children from his first marriage: Tony, Diane, and Brenda. Jim was united in marriage to Yvonne on November 1, 1980 at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. Jim was an avid deer hunter and was always looking forward to making memories with family and friends while hunting. Jim enjoyed being in his garden and sharing the produce. He enjoyed wood working, collecting pocket knives, wood working tools, playing cards, solitaire and reading. Jim had a knack for telling stories and making people laugh. He was a great role model and a patient man not only for his children but also his grandchildren. Jim helped with many projects at church including installing the balcony, lift and was on the church council. He was also a member of the Lions Club and was on the nursing home board. Jim was a man of great wisdom and was always able to use the right words at the right time.
Jim is survived by his wife Yvonne; his three children: Tony Porter (Jonie), Diane Porter and Brenda Nuedeck; his three step-children: Janine Kline, Michael (Lisa) Amberg and Brian Amberg; his ten grandchildren: Jessica, Jennifer, Payton, Lily, Dustin, Devin, Tyler, Jordan and Carly, his great grandchild Brea; his sister Hazel Richards and brother William (Shirley) Porter. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings: Allen Porter, David Porter, Helen Ryan and Ruth Fransen.
