Edna Elvera Swanson Harvey was born on September 8, 1917 at her home in rural Eden Valley, MN, to Leslie and Anna Louise (Johnson) Edwards. She was baptized at age 15 in Eden Lake. Edna attended Eden Valley Watkins school for most of her education and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1936. Edna was united in marriage to Roger Swanson on June 9, 1943 at his family farm. They were blessed with two children, Darlene and Howard. Edna and Roger called Roger’s family farm home from June 1943 until November 1975 when they moved into Hector. Edna made sure that all of their guests at the farm had a warm meal and felt very welcome. She hosted numerous 4-H meetings over her 10 years as leader. They farmed together and were very involved in their community and church. They shared a love of giving to others and helping people out. After Roger passed away in 1975, Edna didn’t want to have to depend on anyone to drive her places so she finally took drivers training and received her driver’s license at the age of 59. The first vehicle she bought for herself was a cream colored, 1976 Ford Mustang. She meticulously cleaned and helped at the Hector Viking Motel for many years. She met Walter Harvey and they were married on January 15, 1983 at the United Methodist Church. They made their home in Hector. They both worked at Tom Thumb and then Hector Senior Dining. Edna finally retired at the age of 88. Walter and Edna enjoyed day trips together; their favorite places included Lake Mille Lacs, New Ulm, and the Olivia Dairy Queen. The Northside Birthday Club, Ladies Aid at church, and Women’s Hospital Auxillary were her social outlets. After Walter passed away in 2007, Edna continued to live in the Hector Apartments until she was 97 years old. Edna then moved into Prairie View Assisted Living, and enjoyed the community and activities there. She was a gift to everyone that knew her. Her life was devoted to serving others, especially her family who never left her home without having something to eat. Edna will be fondly remembered for her spunky personality, independent spirit, and love for her family.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Darlene (Glenn) Gaulke; daughter-in-law, Virginia Swanson; grandchildren: Kevin (Tara) Zanoth, Karen (Kevin) Wulkan, Amy (Matt) Crowell, Jill Gaulke, Daniel (Lisa) Swanson, David (Kari) Swanson, Duane (Ann) Swanson; 27 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Edna was preceded in death by her first husband, Roger Swanson; son, Howard Swanson; infant daughter; second husband, Walter Harvey; parents, Leslie and Anna Louise Edwards; and her brothers, Wilford Edwards and Warren Edwards.
