Gladys Elvera Lillian Peterson was born July 25, 1930 to John and Erna (Ehlen) Mackenthun in Norwood, MN. Gladys grew up in the Norwood-Young America area. She was baptized on August 3, 1930 and confirmed on April 2, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Young America. Gladys graduated from Central High School in Young America. Gladys worked at a restaurant in Norwood and also for her brothers, Rueben and John, at Mackenthun Meat Market in St. Bonifacious. On June 7, 1958, she was united in marriage to Stanley Peterson at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Gladys and Stanley made their home in Bird Island and were blessed with three children. Gladys was a faithful member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Bird Island where she was active in the choir, quilting circle, and was the kitchen chair for the County Fair Food Stand for many years. She was also the main contact for many years at Our Saviors for coordinating the use of the kitchen for funerals, weddings, and other events. Gladys enjoyed cooking, gardening, bowling, and going to coffee with her friends at the “Round Table.” She was also a member of the Bird Island American Legion Auxiliary. Her favorite day of the week was Sunday as it combined all of her favorite things; she would go to church and then cook dinner for her children and grandchildren, and follow the meal with an afternoon of playing cards. Gladys lived for helping her children in any way possible, whether it was spending many hours washing dishes at Pete’s Grill with her daughters, or helping her son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons…..she loved going above and beyond for her family.
Gladys is survived by her children: Mark (Jane) Peterson of Bird Island, Brenda Peterson of Hector, and Denise Peterson of Hector; two grandsons, Jon (fiancé Meagan Korf) and Nicholas Peterson, both of Bird Island; sister, Dolores Holtz of Hutchinson; and brother, Arthur (Janet) Mackenthun of Shakopee. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, John and Erna Mackenthun; husband, Stanley Peterson; siblings: Leonard Mackenthun, Cordelia Zaske, Reuben Mackenthun, Betty Mead, and John Mackenthun.
