Betty Holum, age 95, of Sacred Heart, MN died Saturday, November 9, 2019 at RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 17, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart with Rev. Dale Svendsen officiating. A private family burial was held in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Renville, MN.
Betty M. Holum was born on March 19, 1924, in Hawk Creek Township, Renville Country, Minnesota, to Albert and Hulda Sagnes. She was baptized and confirmed at our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. She grew up on the Sagnes farm and attended school first at Country School District 41, then at Sacred Heart Public School, from which she graduated in 1941. Betty married Thorvald Holum on August 11, 1943. They had been married 60 years at the time of Thorvald's death in 2004. Betty and Thorvald were proud of their farm, their gardens, and especially their beautiful flowers. They retired from farming and moved to an apartment in Sacred Heart in 1999.
Betty was very active all her life in community and church organizations. She was especially proud of being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1966 and a charter member since 1971 of Sons of Norway Elvidal-1-509 Chapter. She also spent many hours volunteering at the Sacred Heart Historical Society
Fluent in Norwegian, Betty traveled four times to Norway to visit family and friends. She and Thorvald also traveled widely in the U.S., many years by car and then with tour groups. Betty was an accomplished accordion player and enjoyed entertaining. She loved embroidery, quilting, and baking. She treasured time with her grandchildren, family, and friends.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Becky Holum-Brytowski (Michael) and Coleen Odegard (Dallas); five grandchildren: Nathan Brytowski (Kelly), Bahiyyih Boxell (Christopher), Nuri Brytowski, Barry Odegard (Jennifer), and Travis Odegard (Jessica); ten great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. Betty passed away on November 9, 2019 at the age of 95.
