Gladys E. Bjur, age 99, of Willmar, formerly of Lake Lillian, died Friday, November 15, 2019, at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 20th, 2019 at United Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. The Rev. LaDonna Ekern will officiate. Burial will be in Community Cemetery in Lake Lillian. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to the services all at the church in Lake Lillian. Arrangement are with K-M Funeral Home, Lake Lillian.
Gladys E. Bjur was born on May 27, 1920, on a farm near Lake Lillian, Minnesota to Charles and Cornilia (Otterness) Flann. She was baptized and later professed her faith after spending two years of Bible study and catechism at Tromso Lutheran Church north of Lake Lillian. She received her education at District 5 and 110 country schools. Since there was no bus service, Gladys lived with her grandmother Elisa Otterness in Willmar. This made it possible for her to attend and graduate from Willmar High School in 1937. During this time she also worked at the A.S.C. office in Willmar for three years. On April 2, 1941, she was united in marriage to Arleigh Bjur, and to this union three children were born. They lived and farmed a short distance from her home farm near Lake Lillian. She kept busy helping with the turkey industry there. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran and later at United Lutheran Church. She was active as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, president of the Women’s groups, and introduced the Bible studies that are still used in the circles. She loved Bible study. After retirement, she worked for 11 years at Willmar State Treatment Center. Again retiring, she was active in the C & C where the Lake Lillian News started and she wrote a column. She loved her family, sewing, and her flower gardens. In 2016, she moved to Sunrise Assisted Living at Bethesda and has resided there since.
She is survived by her son and daughter: Gary (and Diana Hanson) Bjur of Willmar, Beverly (and Gary) Eloranta of River Falls, WI; her daughter-in-law Marlys Bjur of Litchfield, her foster daughter Becky (Harlan) Parker of Fountain Hills, AZ; her grandchildren: Andrew (Cindy) Bjur, Betsy Bjur, Peter Eloranta, Joe Eloranta, and Katrina Hanson; foster grandchildren: Suzanne (Terry) Johnson, Brien Larcom, and Eric Larcom, her great grandchildren: Grace, Riley, Blake, Morgan, Monica, Isabella, and Lincoln; her brother and sisters Myron (and Loretta )Flann, Donna Mae (Billie) Scott, and Maige Erickson; also Karen Bjur and Mitch Larcom; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Arleigh, and son Richard, and her brothers and sister: Curtis, Newell, Burton, Verle, and Howard.
