Paul Charles Schmoll Jr. was born on May 20, 1936 to Paul Sr. and Katherine (Loeffler) Schmoll in Bird Island, MN. He grew up on a farm south of Bird Island. He attended and later graduated from St. Mary’s School. After high school he joined the Army and was stationed in Iceland and also in Arlington, VA at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. During his time in the army, he was awarded a distinguished Marksmanship Award.
On August 2, 1958 Paul was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Patricia Wallenta at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Lake Lillian. They were blessed with four children. Paul operated Budd’s Supper Club in Olivia for many years and later owned and operated Paul’s Vending where he was affectionately known as "The Candy Man”. Later, he was a partner in Olivia Bottled Water, and then retired in 2008 from Jackpot Junction. His favorite part of every job was the relationships he formed with co-workers and customers. Paul enjoyed playing cards, mowing lawns for neighbors and friends, grilling on his Traeger (three meats at a time), making his secret recipe jerky, watching and feeding birds from his deck, and celebrating Corn Capital Days. Paul was a member of the Olivia Fire Department for 20 years, retiring in 1989. He served as an usher at St. Aloysius Catholic Church for many years. He loved the outdoors and traveled extensively throughout North America with family and friends on many fishing and hunting trips. He was always the best shot but often gave others credit for a bird he actually downed. Paul was a true people person and three words that best describe his life were – Family, Friends and People.
Paul is survived by his wife, Pat Schmoll of Olivia; his four children: Brian (Kathy) Schmoll of Darwin, Michelle (John) Brown of Olivia, Scott (Wendy) Schmoll of Forest Lake, and Jon (Alicia Mack) Schmoll of St. Louis Park; his eight grandchildren: Chris (Maureen) Schmoll, Nicole Schmoll, Eric Guevarra, Jared Russell, Ava Schmoll, Vivien Schmoll, Phoebe Schmoll, and Leo Schmoll; sister, Margie (Dennis) Thein of Rochester, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Sr. and Katherine; sister, Arlene Ryan; two brothers, Wilfred “Budd” Schmoll and Sylvester Schmoll; three nephews: Ron Ryan, Donny Schmoll, and Rick Schmoll; and his furry friend, Sammy.
