Lowell Lauer, age 85, of Bird Island died Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Prairie View Assisted Living of Hector. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island with Father George Schmit as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery. There will be military rites following the service. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church on Saturday. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s School. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
George Lowell Lauer was born on August 20, 1935 in Howard, South Dakota to George and Marion (Esser) Lauer. He grew up on the family farm in Bird Island. Lowell graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army in March 1955 and served until March of 1957. Lowell was united in marriage to Florence Hartung at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on June 29, 1957. They were blessed with five sons. Lowell spent his life farming, retiring in 2000. He was very involved in his community and church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Choir for 55 years, and the St. Mary’s School Board. He was also a director for 35 years, and the past secretary and president, of the Bird Island Hawk Creek Insurance Company. He served on the Bird Island Lake Lillian School Board. Lowell had a passion for golfing, fishing, and woodworking. He enjoyed playing cards and traveling as well. Lowell will be remembered for the enjoyment he had for singing and sharing his voice for many years. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Florence of Bird Island; his five sons: Tom (and Mary) Lauer of Plymouth, MN, Steve (and Leslie Jensen) Lauer of Glendale, AZ, Dan (and Donna) Lauer of Northfield, MN, Joe (and Colleen Hart) Lauer of Tonka Bay, MN, and Mark Lauer (and special friend, Tasha Hopkins) of Buffalo, MN; his grandchildren: Angie (and Steve) Schaeppi, Alex Lauer (and special friend, Beth Ireland), Tyler Lauer, Jacob Lauer, Ethan Lauer, Isaac Jensen (and special friend, Hannah Stroud), Avery Lauer, Meredith Lauer, Jack Lauer, and Monica Lauer; his great-grandson, Len Schaeppi ; his step-grandchildren: Matt (and Cassie) Jensen, Tim (and Casey) Jensen, and Andrew (and Nicole) Jensen; and his step-great-grandchildren: Kaiden, Peyton, Abel, and Aubrielle Jensen. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marion Lauer; sisters: Eunice Rueland, Eileen Halliday, and twin sister Lois, in infancy.
