Obituary of Helen Petterson

Helen Violet Petterson of Lake Lillian passed away of natural causes, Sunday, December 6, 2020, at Carris Therapy Suites, in Willmar, MN, having reached the age of 101.  A service will be held at a later date when it is safe to do so. Arrangments with K-M Funeral Home of Lake Lillian.

She was born October 28, 1919 in Willmar, Minnesota to Norwegian immigrants Allette Alsvik and Anton Reed.  Helen was the third of four children, growing up with three brothers.  She enjoyed her youth with her brothers ice skating on Foot Lake, roller skating, and riding horse.  Helen graduated from Willmar High School in 1938.   In 1946 she married the love of her life, Harvey Petterson. They made their home in Willmar for 8 years.  In 1954 they moved to Lake Lillian and worked together at the family business, Petterson Electric. They were blessed with three children, Kent, Lowell, and Lynn. Harvey passed away unexpectedly in 1985.  In 1995, after the tragic death of Lynn, Helen was blessed with three grandchildren, Leta, Anne, and Will, who came to Lake Lillian to grow up under her loving care.

Helen was an active member of the Lake Lillian Methodist Church and church groups.  After the closing of the Lake Lillian Methodist church, she joined the Willmar United Methodist Church.  She loved making crafts and working at the church’s Fall Bazar every year, meeting many new friends and acquaintances. Helen was an organizer for the annual Norwegian Smorgasbord which was held at the Lake Lillian school during the 1950’s and 60’s.  She was an active member of the Lake Lillian PTA, Women’s Auxiliary, C & C, bowling team, and Senior Citizens.

Helen was a great homemaker and cook of Norwegian foods.  She made a wonderful hard lefse!  Glazed, softened, and filled to perfection.  Helen also enjoyed sewing, fishing with Harvey, painting slipware pottery, watching the Twins, Vikings, Gophers and ice skating on TV, playing cards with her friends, exercising, and driving her four wheeled scooter around town.

Helen is survived by her two sons, Kent and Abby (Farr-Petterson) Petterson of Minneapolis, Lowell and Jean Petterson of Lake Lillian. Seven grandchildren; Emily Kaempfer and special friend David Berquist, Hilary (Petterson) and Michael Brazel, Lindsay (Petterson) and Dave Walz, Brett Petterson, Leta (McDonald) and Joe Jacobs, Anne (McDonald) Rakauskas, and Will McDonald. Six great grandchildren: Oliver and Miles Brazel, Madison, Mathew, Nathan, and Bryan Jacobs.  Also many nephews, nieces, and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Harvey, daughter Lynn (McDonald) Catrow, sons-in-law David McDonald, and Chip Catrow, granddaughter Hannah Catrow, parents Allette and Anton Reed, brothers and sisters-in-law,  Arnold and Phyllis Reed, Oswald and Geneva Reed, and George and Gerry Reed, and many other beloved relatives and friends.  We thank God for her memory and the blessings she has given us all.
