Gladys Christina Lillegaard was born on June 3, 1924, to William and Rose (Shubert) Marks near Bechyn in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota.  She attended country school and then St. Mary’s when the family moved to Bird Island.  Gladys grew up with six sisters and three brothers, being the fourth oldest.

During World War II, Gladys worked as a bookkeeper at Swift and Co. in South St. Paul, and when the war ended she moved back to Bird Island.  She met Kermit Lillegaard at a café in Olivia and they were married on May 1, 1948, in Bird Island.  They moved several times before settling in Windom in 1958, where they raised their three children, Douglas, Sandra, and Mark.

Gladys was a homemaker, creating a warm and cozy home for her family.  She enjoyed cooking, baking, and canning her famous ‘corky magorky’ dill pickles.  She welcomed all neighborhood children with her delicious oatmeal raisin cookies.  Gladys also enjoyed embroidery while watching her favorite team, the Minnesota Twins.  She also enjoyed reading and playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Her lap was a favorite place even as the grandchildren grew into adults.  They always knew it was available.

Gladys and Kermit enjoyed traveling together, starting with family vacations in 1958, and continuing with winter trips to Florida.  Children and grandchildren would join them for a visit.

Gladys moved to Renville in 2011 and became a resident of the RenVilla Health Care Center in 2012.

Gladys is survived by her three children: Douglas (and Cida) Lillegaard of Promissao, Brazil, Sandra (and Daniel) Licklider of Renville, and Mark (and Cheryl) Lillegaard of Windom; her five grandchildren: Mandy (and Aaron) Bond, Jessica (and Jacob) Lillegaard, Brandi (and Alex Jenniges) Lillegaard, Sarah (and AJ) Giroux, and Eric (and Larissa) Lillegaard; six great grandchildren: Katie, Jack, Adina, George, Victoria, and Clara; her sisters: Rose (and Eugene) Wrobel and Genevieve Gustafson both of Cottage Grove, and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Kermit; granddaughter Megan Licklider Twernbold, grandson Kyle Licklider; and her siblings: Edward, Archie, Cecelia, Angeline, Marcella, Donald, Jane, and Eugene.

Blessed be the memory of Gladys Lillegaard
