Funeral services will be on Friday, June 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Bird Island with Pastor Dan Croonquist officiating. Burial will be in the Palmyra Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hector. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
Vallalee Marie Wertish was born on November 23, 1931 to Richard and Norella (Johnson) Sather in Flint, MI. She grew up in rural Palmyra Township and attended grade school at the country school just down the road from her home; eventually graduating from Bird Island High School in 1949. She was a member of the Palmyra Lutheran Church where she was confirmed. After high school she worked as a book keeper at the Chevrolet dealer in Bird Island that at the time had multiple owners during her employment there. Vallalee was united in marriage in Iowa to Joseph Wertish on August 14, 1952. Their marriage was blessed with five children. She excelled in her roles as mother and farming partner. Vallalee enjoyed working alongside Joseph on the farm driving tractor and combine as well as keeping the family well fed and taken care of. She was a member of the Red Hatters, Palmyra Couples Club, and card clubs. She was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the church choir and was a driver for Meals on Wheels. Vallalee crocheted many afghans for her family and never missed coffee time in the morning and afternoon. She loved to travel; taking many trips with her children and grandchildren to various places throughout the United States as well as a few trips outside of the country. The greatest gift to her family was the numerous memories that were made on their trips together. A visit to Grandma Val’s house was not complete without pop, pizza, chocolate chip cookies, a few video games, and all of her grandchildren and their friends. She was very involved in the lives of her family; she rarely missed sporting events, was available to shuffle kids to appointments, and help transport farmers from field to field. Vallalee had so much love to give that she “adopted” many children and grandchildren that she always remembered on holidays and birthdays with a card or visit. Vallalee will be remembered for her warm smile, contagious laugh, and unending generosity and love.
Vallalee is survived by her children: Brent (and Julie) Wertish of Bird Island, Mike (and Karen) Wertish of Woodbury, Tom (and Bonnie) Wertish of Hector, Kathy (and Jim) Ledwein of St. Anthony, and Brian (and Keri) Wertish of Stillwater; her grandchildren: Joseph (Jill), Brooke (Bob), Nicolette (Joshua), Chad, Laurel, Tommy (Cailin), Reid (Jenna), John (Tayler), Jaclyn (Sam), Aiyana (fiancé, Chris), Sydney, and Jackson; her great-grandchildren: Adrianna, Angelina, Brock, Diesel, Elizabeth, Victoria, Rosie, Thomas “Charlie”, Louis, Alivia, Jeffrey, and Mason; her sisters, Virginia (and Denny) Graham and Violet (and David) Ratcliffe; and brother-in-law, Robert (and Vonnie) Wertish. Vallalee was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Norella; her husband, Joseph; and her brother, Rayland Sather.
